“Bridges connecting architects…“
Rivers separate, and bridges connect…
Often people unconsciously say: “The river brings us together…”, Instead of separating…
Different borders, between two cities, republics, countries…, are formed by natural means… For example, by the flow of rivers… Like in our case between the town of Slavonski Brod in the Republic of Croatia and the town of Bosanski Brod in the Republic of Srpska…
The Sava River separates us, and the bridges across it connect…
Here at that place, the bridge has already been demolished and rebuilt several times, or the existing one reconstructed… It has a classic shape, you can see that the design came from its construction… It is based on iron profiles… Joined with rivets… It has over sixty years…
It doesn’t have the elegance and soul that only an architect-artist can breathe into it…
Beautiful bridges …
I remember from secondary school of civil engineering my professor… On one occasion he boasted that he got a job designing bridges because his solution was the cheapest…
It made some sense to me then, but… Why do I still remember it today after 45 years… Today I can only imagine what his “cheap” solution looked like… Especially since he was also a graduate civil engineer… Not architect…
Of course, honor to the exceptions, creative colleagues graduated in civil engineering…
When I was 26 years old, I won a competition for the conceptual design of a pedestrian bridge over the railway in Slavonski Brod…
Of the four participants in that Competition, I was the only one who was an architect, the other three were civil engineering graduates…
The difference was also visible among our works, of course…
Vocational bridges…
Real bridges, fortunately, and unfortunately, follow us from birth, first love, until death… It’s nice when love tries, at least figuratively, on the fence of the bridge, to lock it with a padlock… It’s ugly when someone knocks them down, especially when he jumps off them and ends his life…
And some bridges, for tactical military reasons, are destroyed in the war… It’s a shame…
Just as there are real, friendships, there should also be professional bridges of professional colleagues… And primarily, in the public interest…
There are so many beautiful bridges built in the world… They were designed by creative people… Kudos to them… They should be an example to others…
