I was a little over ten years old when the first large department store opened in our town… It had a basement, ground floor, and first floor…
It had a classic wide three-legged reinforced concrete staircase… But also an escalator …
The escalator was an attraction for everyone, especially for us boys…
With what we drove from the basement to the first floor, and back down the classic staircase…
All for the reason that there was one escalator each and only for driving to the upper floors…
Only when one of our schoolmates was killed did we stop driving… He hit his head on the mezzanine structure because he was coming out of the staircase…
After that event, he had his head wrapped up for a long time…
