Water up to the throat…

“Shut up…

Children’s games in the basement of the building …

We children, who grew up in apartment buildings, had one privilege…

And that’s the basement of our building…

Inside we gathered, played, even smoked…

We also made “House of Fear”…

In the basement, especially in the summer, it was fresh and pleasant… But even in the winter it was warmer than outside… Always against the temperature…

The only problem was after heavy rains, when our basements flood… There is up to approx. 30 centimeters of water…

So those cigarettes that we hid from our parents get wet…

After the rain stops, the water from the basement recedes, but the moisture remains for days…

Both in the air, and in the concrete floor slab, walls, plaster…

Throat water …

After the death of my wife’s aunt Mirjana, my wife inherited the apartment on the ground floor of the neighboring residential building… Of approx. 70 square meters…

The building is about a hundred years old… It was built from small normal bricks… Of course, without horizontal waterproofing under the walls…

Even when Sanja’s aunt was alive, you could feel the humidity in the air, when they came to her place for coffee…

The lower parts of the walls were full of capillary moisture… This is moisture that “climbs” up from the ground, over the brick foundation, towards the walls… Because the floor waterproofing was not installed…

Sometime in 2000, Mirjana renovated the parquets and the floor structure in the bedroom and living room… And the contractor dug everything up and installed floor waterproofing…

A few years later, after she replaced the wooden window in the bedroom with a plastic one, the walls began to turn black… Mold was forming from the moisture in the air…

Rehabilitation of the consequences …

The same apartment, now owned by the wife, again needs to be renovated due to the effects of moisture…

Given that our children are already grown up and provided with housing, Wife Sanja decided to rent that apartment…

Saja’s aunt grew up in a poor family, married late, so she kept everything she needed and didn’t need… Of course, first we had to take the old clothes, furniture, equipment and other things to the recycling yard…

Only now were all the consequences of capillary moisture better visible… I rearranged one part of the floor, made of bricks, of the storage room under the building’s staircase and poured cement glaze…

We cleaned the apartment of rotten plaster and put a new one… We are waiting for it to dry before they start painting…

We bought new kitchen elements and carpets…

We also have to solve the ventilation in the bathroom, because there is no window…

That’s why we shouldn’t wait and solve everything at the last minute, but slowly and gradually… So that the water doesn’t reach our throats…

The most important thing is to remove the causes first, and then repair the consequences…
