My late grandmother Ivka lived in Podvinje. It’s a place on a hill, north of Slavonski Brod in Croatia… Like every house in the countryside and in my grandparents’ house there were a lot of cats…
They are as cute as small ones, and as useful as big ones because they catch mice… But they are also stubborn…
I remember how the cat stalked and hunted the field mice… She was persistent in waiting for the mouse to emerge from her underground hole… And then jump and the mouse is in her mouth…
Of course, she had to brag about the caught mice to her grandmother, placing them on the doorstep…
But cats also have their enemies… These are usually dogs…
Black Cat…
Even as a child, I remember that the elders told us that a black cat brings bad luck… And that, if it crosses your path, you have to spit three times, in order to avoid bad luck…
Even worse, we all did that… Spit three times, both big and small…
Because of her mystical appearance, I don’t really like to meet her… I avoid her… But I don’t spit three times…
The black cat is often used in various novels, comics, cartoons, and other horror films… It is mostly an animal with negative characteristics.
Especially, when you chase her and she doesn’t run away… She stands and looks into your eyes… Terrible… A chill runs through my body…
Cleanliness Squad…
For the removal of dead or killed animals from public areas, there is a competent Institution… They act in accordance with the regulations upon notification by communal wardens or citizens…
There are trampled snakes, hedgehogs, cats, rats, various birds, and other smaller animals.
Sometimes, when the system doesn’t work, the bodies of dead animals decompose and stink far away…
It’s a pity, that even black cats don’t know how to spit, maybe they would avoid their misfortune…
