Four-leaf clover …

“Luck, or…

Three-leaf clover …

My aunt Marija lived in Osijek…

She and her family would come to Podvinje, a village near Slavonski Brod, on weekends to their plum orchard…

The plum orchard was a few kilometers away from my grandparents…

Walking together to their cottage in the plum orchard, we passed by grassy areas…

Of course, we always looked around while walking…

At other cottages, plums, cherries, strawberries, sour cherries…

Only my aunt Marija looked down at the grass…

And she always found four-leaf clovers…

And the rest of us, nothing…

Four-leaf clover …

“A four-leaf clover is a rare, lucky mutation of the common three-leaf clover, symbolizing faith, hope, love, and luck, with each leaf representing one of these virtues.
These charms offer protection and were used by ancient Celtic Druids to ward off evil spirits, while medieval children believed they revealed fairies, with their rarity making them powerful symbols of good fortune.
What it is
  • A genetic anomaly, not a separate species, occurring in the common white clover (Trifolium repens).
  • A variation where one leaflet grows on a normal three-leaf clover, though sometimes five or more can appear.
Why it’s lucky
  • Rarity: The odds are about 1 in 5,000 to 10,000, making them difficult to find.
  • Symbolism: The four leaves represent Faith, Hope, Love, and Luck.
  • Ancient Beliefs: Celtic priests (Druids) used them for protection, and later folklore linked them to seeing fairies.
How to find them
  • Look for square shapes in clover patches from a distance, as four-leaf clovers often appear more symmetrical or “plus-shaped”.
  • If you find one, look for more nearby, as the plant is more likely to produce them in clusters.

Five-leaf clover …

A few years ago, together with my son, we were in Osijek, at my cousin Helena’s…

We went to the grave of her mother, my aunt Marija…

I often think of her… She was a good person… She was a believer…

Although clovers did not help her with her illnesses, she died a few years ago…

But for me she still lives…
